Our purpose
is to encourage and support the wide range of filmmaking talent in Australia
(and particularly the capital region) and to encourage the sharing of
new film ideas, styles and skills from overseas with the Australian
community.
SNOWYfest
launched in June 2004 at Thredbo, Australia's premier alpine resort.
The 2004
festival offered two categories of competition, both open and Thredbo-Snowy
River region of NSW. In 2005 the second category expanded to include
the Australian Capital Region, with cash prizes for Best Film and Runner
Up in the open category, and Best Film and Runner up for the Australian
Capital Region.
The success
of the debut festival in 2004 has carried over into subsequent years
with entries flooding in from across the world and our first international
winner of the Best Short Film prize in 2006. Finalists and prize winners
from 2004 and 2005 have gone on to win global recognition, including
shortlisting for Academy Award nomination, Slamdance Festival gongs
and more. The Thredbo-Snowy River prize expanded in 2005 to take in
the Australian Capital Region, a tradition which continues today.
More recent
Festivals have also seen greatly expanded screenings and even more opportunities
for filmmakers to get their works shown in the NSW ski capital. A small
program of workshops for filmmaking, acting, scriptwriting or other
topic areas are selectively conducted each year and will continue in
2007.
SNOWYfest
enjoys the dedicated and generous support of the Thredbo community particularly
Tourism Thredbo, The Thredbo Chamber of Commerce, Kosciuszko-Thredbo
and festival host, the world-class Thredbo Alpine Hotel.
